[The feed turns on to show Ukitake kneeling next to his futon, where his zanpakutou is resting, unsheathed. Someone familiar with the Taichou would notice immediately that his white haori is nowhere to be seen. He looks to be deep in concentration.

He stays like that for a few moments and then opens his eyes, looking a little surprised.]

Of course. It's been a while since I've looked at it that way.

[He then stares out the window, not really focusing on anything, just looking in that direction, and is quiet again. After that silence, he tilts his head to the side and smiles gently.]

Yes. I would like to speak with you more often. I've been meaning to, but...well, you understand what's going on up here.

[He taps the side of his head for emphasis. There is a final silence and then the feed times out.]

Ah, Rinoa. I was just talking with my zanpakutou.

Our zanpakutou are a part of our souls and remain with us until death. We keep an open communication so we both can grow stronger, in the mind and the soul.

I guess one could compare to finding a deeper part of yourself and coming to understand it better.

[The young woman nods in understanding.]

So the stronger that bond becomes the better?

Yes. In that case, the Shinigami and the zanpakutou act more in sync than someone who is just beginning to get to know their zanpakutou.

In other words, the most time you spend with your zanpakutou the stronger the bond gets.

So do all shinigami have one?

Yes, in a sense. You do have to make an effort to get to know your zanpakutou. This begins with learning its name.

[He looks at the zanpakutou on his futon for a moment and then moves to sheath it.]

This is Sougyo no Kotowari, for example.

...How do you learn the name? Does the zanpakutou gives you it's name or what?

The details are different for every zanpakutou, but you do need to ask for the name and mean it.

Sougyo no Kotowari can be roughly translated to "Truth of Pisces."

[He hums quietly in amusement.]

So there can be the case where the zanpakutou doesn't gives you it's name? What happens then?

If the zanpakutou doesn't reveal its name, then the Shinigami is unable to unlock the zanpakutou's abilities.

There are two stages after this. Shikai, or the initial release, in which the zanpakutou changes its appearance in order to access its special powers.

And then there is Bankai, or the final release, and a Shinigami must be on a deeper level with their zanpakutou in order to gain this stage. It gives a Shinigami complete control over the zanpakutou's power.

Astrological...yes, I've heard that before.

He, actually. But yes, I believe we had a successful talk.
