Cough 021 - [Video Post]

[The feed opens with the sight of Ukitake coughing into his free hand. Luckily, no blood can be spottted. Yet.]

Ungh...my apologies. Even with the weather clearing up, it seems that it has finally caught up with me. [Cough.] It's what I get for traipsing about in the snow.

[He tucks himself into bed, propped up on pillows again. This is a normal pose for the Shinigami, as friends have and will come to know. Sniffling, he speaks again.]

I should be back to myself within a week or tw--

[There must have been a tickle in his throat because he's coughing violently now, red visible through the cracks of his fingers before the feed ends.]

... Would you like some more tea?

[He struggles to smile when he sees her on the PCD.]

It's not your fault, Rinoa.

[Cough, cough.]

I brought this upon myself.

...It couldn't hurt.

[With nothing more than a little nod, he shuts off the feed and begins to brew the tea as best he can. He adds in some different herbs as the water boils, and, once it's hot enough to satisfy him, he takes a sip, considers it, smiles and races to Ukitake's domain. The whole ordeal takes about ten minutes, total. He calls out for Ukitake when he arrives at his house.]

[He props himself up as best as he can when he hears his name. He's learned that calling out names ends badly, so he knocks on the wall instead, hoping Rain will be able to find him.]

I'll ask Unohana what would be best and bring it over.

Ah!

[After a moment or two, the door opens and in he comes with a small smile, and he steps over to where the shinigami is resting.]

Here we--ah...

[He looks around sheepishly.]

...do you have any cups?

Ah...try not to worry her too much. I don't want her on my case, if you understand me.

I can just say it's for a different friend?

[Do forgive her because she's not smiling back at you and looks openly guilty.]

I should have insisted more, this could have been prevented.

[Ukitake raises his non-bloodstained hand in greeting, and then points to the desk at the back of the room.]

Second drawer. And make yourself comfortable.

Rinoa, don't-

[Well damn, have some coughing to interrupt.]

Ugh...Don't do this. I've always been sick and I always will be. This was only a matter of time.

Heh...whatever you feel is best.

[He chuckles a bit and gets two cups and sits them down on a table close by. He pulls a chair up to where Ukitake is resting and pours the tea. The first cup goes to the captain, along with an eager look of "Oh, I hope my old remedy still works!"]

[He digs around his sheets for a moment, finding an old rag, and wipes off his hand. Blood isn't very appetising.]

Thank you, Rain.

[He breathes in the steam, hoping to calm his lungs, and then takes a sip.]

Mmm, this is wonderful.

[He beams and pours himself a cup. He takes a sip and sighs.]

I know this sort of tea would help when I was having a spell like yours. What--if you don't mind my asking--is your illness called?

[She just sighs and looks away.]

I'm quite aware of that, but walking around in the snow didn't helped...I...

...should have gone to see you or we could have just talked through this.

[Ukitake takes another sip.]

It's very soothing. I may have to ask how you made it.

I have Tuberculosis, or Consumption as it was called a few centuries ago.

Con...

[His eyes drop and he sighs.]

...Yes. That's exactly what I had. I can give you the necessary herbs for the tea, if you want.

Please don't blame yourself. I knew what I was doing and...

[He clears his throat, rubbing his chest a little bit.]

I wanted to see you in person.

"Had"? Does your world have a cure?

I would appreciate that.

Ah...hm.

[This is where it gets rough.]

There's not really a cure back home. Except for one thing.

[He eyes Ukitake carefully for a very long time.]

Immortality.

Ah. That doesn't sound so appealing to me, honestly.

[He goes into another coughing fit, hopefully not spilling the tea anywhere.]

Nngh... At least, most of the time it doesn't.

[He scoots closer to Ukitake.]

Can I get you anything? Medication? More tea?

[The immortality talk will have to be postponed a bit. Helping the shinigami is top priority for the immortal.]

I still do, I shouldn't have agreed to let you come here...

[Takes a deep breath.]

I could have gone to see you.
