Cough 035 - [Accidental Voice]

[The feed turns on to a deep voice, sounding less than amused at something.  Anyone who knows him will recognize that voice as Squall/Leon.]

-spectfully disagree.

[And then a sigh is heard, and a slightly different voice.  Ukitake's.]

I assure you, I am quite capable of taking care of myself.  How many times must we discuss this?

[A pause.]

I am in good health right now.  Doing a patrol every now and then won't kill me, Squall-san, as much as I appreciate your conce-

[The feed then quickly switches off.]

[Squall folded his arms across his chest and sighed. He had no idea just how many times they'd gone over this.]

I didn't say you couldn't do patrols, Ukitake. Just not by yourself.

I never said you were helpless Ukitake. I said just not by yourself. I know you're a grown man damn it. If you can't think of yourself fine. But what would the people who depend on you do if something happened to you? We had a damn scare when you thought going after the Kyuubi was a good idea.

[He closes his eyes and bows his head slightly.]

...This isn't worth fighting over.

[Squall sighed. He didn't want to fight over this either, but his friend's health and safety came first.]

No it isn't. And you also have to think of your health. You have an attack while something attacks you? Did you come up with a convenient excuse for that too?

It's happened before. I was fine in a few days.

[But his expression turns a little darker, remembering a certain rainy night when everything changed.]

[Another sigh and shake of the head.]

In a few days. But what about if you need help right away and can't get to your PCD?

I have thick skin, kidou, and my zanpakutou. If the situation were to really get that dire, I would be able to fend for myself for quite some time.

[Ukitake earned a scowl for his trouble]

Thick skin my ass.

[Ukitake didn't say anything for a moment, but then pushed up a sleeve, baring his arm.]

Hit me. If you won't take my word, then let me show you.

[Squall blinked owlishly at his friend. Only his eyes registered the surprise and that was only momentarily. He would never willingly fight this man because Ukitake was the closest thing he had to a male best friend. He wasn't afraid, but he wouldn't want to be the one explaining to everyone what happened no matter who won or lost, either.]

I refuse.

[He sighed and let his sleeve fall back down. Of course Squall wouldn't do it. Was Ukitake surprised? Not really. But they were still here, arguing stubbornly in a circle.]

Then at least trust me. I've been doing this much longer than you've been walking.

[Squall somehow got the feeling that he had let his friend down. He ran a hand through his thick brown hair and sighed.]

I do trust you Ukitake, that isn't the point at all. And I understand what you're saying, I know you've lived lifetimes compared to me. But that doesn't stop me from being concerned if something happens to you and no one is around to help.

...If you're so worried about me, then you can say it straight. You don't have to take the long way around to arrive at a simple conclusion.

[Squall realized it was meant as a joke, but he was still on 'destruct' mode. He turned away and shook his head.]

You know damn well I worry about you.

[Ukitake chuckled lightly, leaning against the house.]

I do appreciate the concern, don't misunderstand me, but apart from the fact that I am a captain for a reason, there is something you must know about me.

I very much dislike fighting. However, when the need arises, I decide how to fight based on one of two things. The fight for life or the fight for pride.

[Storm blue eyes watched Ukitake's every movement, just in case for some reason his friend still wanted to fight. At the words spoken he immediately sympathized, those were the reasons he would fight too.]

Then..which one was it that made you go after Kyuubi that night?

Life, the lives of others.

[He bowed his head again.]

Although I should have brought along help in that situation.

[He waited for Squall's smug response to that, knowing that he was actually pretty stupid for going out alone.]

[Squall saw the bowed head and decided not to push since Ukitake obviously already knew it went wrong somehow that night. His voice just dropped to a quiet tone and he even tried to smile.]

Now you see why I worry.

One instance still does not constitute a habit.

No but it's still a possibility.

[Sigh.]

[Squall smiled and clapped a hand on Ukitake's shoulder.]

That's why we're friends.
