Cough 035 - [Accidental Voice]

[The feed turns on to a deep voice, sounding less than amused at something. Anyone who knows him will recognize that voice as Squall/Leon.]

[And then a sigh is heard, and a slightly different voice. Ukitake's.]

I assure you, I am quite capable of taking care of myself. How many times must we discuss this?

[A pause.]

I am in good health right now. Doing a patrol every now and then won't kill me, Squall-san, as much as I appreciate your conce-

[The feed then quickly switches off.]

...If you're so worried about me, then you can say it straight. You don't have to take the long way around to arrive at a simple conclusion.

[Squall realized it was meant as a joke, but he was still on 'destruct' mode. He turned away and shook his head.]

You know damn well I worry about you.

[Ukitake chuckled lightly, leaning against the house.]

I do appreciate the concern, don't misunderstand me, but apart from the fact that I am a captain for a reason, there is something you must know about me.

I very much dislike fighting. However, when the need arises, I decide how to fight based on one of two things. The fight for life or the fight for pride.

[Storm blue eyes watched Ukitake's every movement, just in case for some reason his friend still wanted to fight. At the words spoken he immediately sympathized, those were the reasons he would fight too.]

Then..which one was it that made you go after Kyuubi that night?

[He bowed his head again.]

Although I should have brought along help in that situation.

[He waited for Squall's smug response to that, knowing that he was actually pretty stupid for going out alone.]

[Squall saw the bowed head and decided not to push since Ukitake obviously already knew it went wrong somehow that night. His voice just dropped to a quiet tone and he even tried to smile.]

Now you see why I worry.

One instance still does not constitute a habit.

No but it's still a possibility.

[Sigh.]

You're just as stubborn as I am, Arashi.

[Squall smiled and clapped a hand on Ukitake's shoulder.]

That's why we're friends.

Yare, yare...and constantly butting heads.

Come on Ukitake. You have to admit it's fun.

All I want is for you to take someone with you. That's all.

And I would appreciate if others recognized and trusted my abilities and position.

[Squall turned on his heel and stalked away.]

[That favored word of Squall's is really starting to get on Ukitake's nerves. He pushes himself off from the wall.]

Squall-san!

[Squall heard the footsteps approaching behind him and stopped, whirling around with an angry expression on his face.]

What? You want my permission to get yourself killed out there? You'll never have it. But I'm the one that's going to be going after your ass each and every single damn time to go get you out of one predicament or another.

But if you think I'm going to be happy about you getting hurt and having to explain as to why no one was there covering your ass, you can forget it.

[Listening to Squall scold him like a child caused Ukitake to clench his fists, nails starting to dig into his skin.

Damn him. Damn him and his truths.

Ukitake knew he was right and knew that his pride was too great sometimes. He should just walk away, apologize for wasting time, and get over himself.

But instead, he took a step back, showing that he stepped down from the fight.]

[For one munute Squall had been convinced that he was going to be beat down, and he wouldn't put up a fight either.

Once Ukitake had stepped back, Squall took a step closer and put his hands on the other man's shoulders, looking him right in the eyes. His voice was far calmer now.]

I'm not trying to coddle you, but damn it, I don't want to lose anyone else here. Especially on my watch. I've failed enough. You, Rin, Jr, Yuki and Zack are like family to me. I don't want to see anything else happen to any one of you.

[Slowly, his fists relaxed and he let out a breath.]

...I understand.

[Squall took his hands off of Ukitake and stepped back, nodding. He hoped everything was resolved.]

Do what you think is best. But I meant what I said.

[With that, he turned and walked off.]
