Cough 055 - [Video]

[A figure of white is seen laying down on his stomach next to a pond. The haori is clearly seen, though what number on the back is hard to make out, but the white hair is a dead giveaway. However, Ukitake's hair is fluffier than normal, and there is a pair of white, round ears peeking out from his hair on top of his head. The tip of his nose is black in contrast, though, as he looks almost longingly into the water at his new reflection.]

...I know I shouldn't, but I really have this urge to go swimming.

[He dips one of his hands (still human, mind you) into the water and splashes some away from him, looking up to follow the ripples the action creates. Ukitake smiles at the sight.]

Still a little cold. Spring should be here soon, though.

[He brings his knees up to his chest, but still leans against Urahara.]

_{[Humming quietly, he idly plays with polartakebear's hair before reaching up and tugging lightly on one of his furry ears with a grin.]}

[He turns his head to look at Urahara.]

Why?

Why do you find me as such?

_{['Hmm'ing quietly as he studies Ukitake, Urahara's grey eyes travel over the man before he shifts and gestures for the other man to lean over the pond with him.]}

What do you see?

[Ukitake leans over the water and takes a moment, trying to ignore how ridiculous his new features look.]

An old man, partially hidden under a bear's face.

_{[He rests his chin on Ukitake's shoulder, looking at their joint reflection.]}

[His eyes flick over to Urahara's reflection for a moment, but then he looks back at his own, going quiet for a little longer.]

Two...souls.

And what do you see in those souls?

...Life.

[And too many other things to name. They've both seen too much, though different in nature.]

And what do you see in this one's [He stretches out a finger to point at Ukitake's reflection.] life?

[Ukitake doesn't need to look at his own reflection to answer that.]

Where to start...

[He sits back up.]

Family, friends, acceptance, pain...loneliness. All generalizations, of course.

So then go into details.

[He lets out a breath. This could be a while.]

I'm the eldest in my family, with five brothers and two sisters. They rely on me for support since our parents are gone. I haven't seen Kyouraku since he was here for a month, countless months ago. And...that's hard. He and I were inseparable in the Academy and have been that way ever since. He was one of the first people to care about me regardless of my illness, and I'm sure you've seen how bad my attacks can get.

[He sighs.]

It hurts, having this condition. Unohana-taichou does all she can and more, for which I'm eternally grateful. Even so, I will not lie and say I'm not in pain on bad days, because I am. But I've learned to accept it and not let it control my life. That's no way to live.

[The "loneliness" topic is purposefully left unexplained.]

_{[And Urahara just shifts to look at him, soft grey eyes gazing at him from the dark circle markings around his eyes. And his silent isn't the unaccepting kind, or the awkward kind, or even the companionable kind. It's the silence that knows there's more out there and is patiently waiting for it.]}

[He lets the silence stay there for a few more moments before meeting Urahara's gaze. And smirking juuust slightly.]

And I enjoy gardening and walks on the beach and sweets...

_{[There's a small twitch of Urahara's lips and he doesn't bother hiding his amusement, but still, the silence waits.]}

[Ukitake takes another sip of his tea.]

...I have no regrets.

_{[Still waiting. Good thing he can be patient.]}
